So your playing a pick-up game of AD&D and you can have your pick of character classes. What would it be?

I like playing so many classes for different reasons, but if I have to choose, I'll go with the Illusionist because it allow a lot of room for creativity in terms of using spells to deceive your enemies.

I like magic-users! I don't even mind having completely crappy hit points at 1st level. I used a quarterstaff to ward off nasty buggers like kobolds and goblins. Fighters are my friends (for now).

I've always been a fan of thieves. I've sadly have rarely ever played a magic-user. I need to fix that. Playing a Gnome Thief/Illusionist has been a blast in the past though!

Have just always loved to play Paladins. They start strong and end stronger

Hoi! Where's the assassin? Assassins are the only reason I bought the AD&D books (they never managed to drag me away from B/X).

Doh, how did I ever forget Assassin? Old age, I guess. Added.

I'm realizing there are a few classes that I've never played. Assassin, Monk, & Bard. I've run an NPC Bard in 2e, but I've never played one as a PC. I'd be curious how many of these classes has anyone else never played?

I'm like you. I'm sure I've never played Assassin or 1e Bard and can't recall ever playing Monk.

Yeah, but I always seem to have players that want to play the sub-classes. I'm usually pretty happy just with the core four.

I have always been fond of the fighter and its subclasses.

I have never played a monk but I think it would be fun.

The subclasses can be fun but the core 4 work for me.

I completely agree. I've had some great times playing Paladins and Rangers. I'd be interested in playing a druid in the right campaign as well.

My first ADND experience was playing a tough ranger in a humanoid rich Slavers series campaign - Ranger are near and dear to my heart. They are followed closely by thief - and typically human or half elven.
