Dwarven Undead
« on: July 12, 2016, 09:36:50 AM »
I'm working on a project involving a ruined dwarven city and I am wondering if there is a comprehensive list of dwarven undead for 1st Edition AD&D anywhere? I'm not interested in 2nd Edition AD&D monster listings unless they have been converted to a 1e clone, or something like Adventures Dark and Deep (huge monster book!).

In 1E, dwarven undead were just like human undead, only shorter.

Yes, I think all demi-human and humanoid undead are regarded the same as any undead. However, if you wanted to flavor them up a bit, I'd give them a better AC and/or higher HP because of bone density. I'd also regard them as particularly repulsive to dwarves who see them as being rejected by the ground (an the stones within it). Any undead other than a dwarf is simply an abomination to be destroyed. But a dwarf who has been thus rejected? Unthinkable! (And imagine the horror of a dwarf seeing a re-animated corpse of a beloved leader or kinsman!)

I don't recall any special descriptions of dwarven or elfin undead. A look at the list of undead creatures doesn't suggest any.

ghost
ghast
ghoul
penanggalan
vampire
shadow
wight
wraith
spectre
apparition
coffer corpse
poltergeist
haunt
revenant
mummy
lich
demilich
death knight
skeleton warrior
zombie/animal zombie/monster zombie
skeleton/animal skeleton
sons of kyuss
crypt thing
necrophidius
huecuva

The variation on zombies and skeletons shown by having animal versions and monster versions with different capabilities strongly supports treating dwarf skeletons and zombies as shiftkitty said--tweak the AC or hp or whatever else to reinforce the notion that these aren't human undead. You certainly don't have to make them different, though.

2nd edition had Undead Dwarf. Just wan't sure if 1e had something similar anywhere. I think there was a rapper in Dragon Magazine. I'm probably going with a dwarven death knight. Since dwarves can't be paladins, I'm thinking a fighter/cleric may be close enough.

How'd you end up statting that out? How'd it play?

Not sure why converting 2nd Ed. listings is work...  I routinely convert 1st Ed. listings to my 2nd Ed. game, though there is decided power creep in 2nd Ed. monster listings.  For example, all Giants were given +4 HD from their 1st Ed. listings.  Aside from that, there is very little difference between 1st and 2nd Ed. monster listings.  Just curious what your concern might be.  Cheers!

Just more interested in building from Gygaxian, or Gygaxian-era sources. I'd rather try to convert something from Dangerous Journeys for instance than 2nd Edition, even though the 2nd Edition source might be easier to do.

Never knew about the "Dangerous Journeys" stuff, till now.

Now, i'll want to get that and incorporate that and "Adventures Dark & Deep" into my Roll20 & tabletop games while  layering in anything new from 2nd through 5th edition.

Anything to establish what would be a true "Gygaxian" foundation for a truer 3rd edition of AD&D, would be cool.

Was the Undead Dwarf in 2E stat-ed by Lorraine ?!  );p
