Laser Lore
« on: February 25, 2016, 02:06:15 PM »
So I stay in touch with my old friends since moving back East, and the subject of laser guns vs plate armor came up. I doubt a laser would reflect off of plate armor unless it was maybe reallllllllllllllly super shiny, and even then the sudden burst of heat could do some damage. (Ever touch a mirror that's been in the sunlight too long?)

After we talked a little bit he told me about something he read regarding Cyberpunk where a laser that hit plate armor dealt full damage, but one that "missed" would at least deal 1/4 damage in the form of burn damage, assuming the metal was right against your skin. I reminded him about the layers of padding beneath plate, so I felt  miss would still be just that, a no-damage miss.

Scientific lasers aside, how would you rule laser pistols or blasters?

(I think he's planning a 5e game where the streams get crossed.)

I think you're right on point SK. I think the padding would make a miss a miss. Interesting conversation though!

I've played in a game where somebody had a similar rule for lasers, but his justification was that the laser was being fired as a beam and even when you missed you had a chance to sweep it back on target.  Of course lasers required a power source which were ridiculously hard to find so their was a balance to the guaranteed damage.

Now I'm wondering, if a miss is a miss due to the padding, could the sudden superheating cause the padding to combust?
