Title: 1e Core Rulebooks Now Available POD
Post by: Dizzy on January 24, 2017, 01:02:09 PM
Has the title states, today the core rulebooks for 1e have been released as PoD on dmsguild.com

I might have to pick up some PHB's for my next game.

I got my POD copy of "Sages and Specialists", last night...  Very impressed with the quality.  It is not the same as the original, but for $10, it is actually rather impressive.  The paper is decent, heavy, and the printing is quite good, as is the binding (softcover).  I am very impressed with it.  I will not hesitate to purchase a POD title again.  Matter of fact, I will prefer it!  The artwork looks much like a graphic novel, due to the paper, and the printing quality.  I really cannot fault anything on it -- for the price, it exceeds my expectations.  YMMV.   :o

A few years ago, I bought a good condition copy of the 2e PHB off of e-Bay.  When I got it, I found out that it is a misprint (seller never mentioned it...), and not really useable.  Now I think I might pick up a POD copy of the same.  They are really good quality, especially for the price!  Cheers!

Just curious, but is there any method of identifying a POD over the original print run?

I'm pretty sure it will be based on the reprints that were already done. PoD quality is never as nice as a real print run. They're not likely to have stitch binding, or the fake leather cover. I don't know if they'll have anything to identify it as such, but it should be easily identifiable otherwise.

Like Dizzy says, they're likely to be shiny hardcovers with perfect-bound pages. Still, better than nothing.

Thing is, will this new print on demand run correct the OCR scanning errors introduced in the original Premium book run ???

Someone please let us know when they get the books !

...and adding in the errata from the PHB, MM, and DMG would be nice too! I think they already did for the UA. ;)

Glad to hear about the spines, though I wonder about the modules... Oh well!

Modules do not have removable covers. Most are perfect bound as well. I think only L1 is stapled.

I'm not sure if errata is in the PoD. I've never actually looked through my reprints against my originals enough.

My understanding is that the Premium Versions fixed all of the errata but introduced new OCR scanning errors, which they have not bothered to fix for the current PDF versions yet.

Really, it would be incredibly stupid of them if they still have the OCR errors, at this point.

That said, if they have been corrected, i would guess they will update the PDF's after the initial batch of books are arriving to the customers. They updated "X2: Castle Amber", that way.

I ordered a hardback copy of a non-TSR book on the Elemental Plane of Fire, and the Brass City.  I took the plunge on it as I really wanted it in a hardback, not softcover.  Waiting for it to be delivered.  I'll post on what the quality is like when I get it in hand...

Really waiting for the 2e core books to be offered in POD Hardback...  Want a new copy of my 2e PHB.  Ordered one off of e-Bay, for a decent price, in very good condition, but it turned out to be a mis-print, and not particularly useful.  Hoping they move forward, quickly, with the POD offerings for more than just the 1e books.  Cheers!

Yeah seems they're adding like 3 or 4 a week. It'll be nice to have all the core rules for every edition on POD. I'd think that'd be the first go to.

Got my hard-cover POD copy of, The Traveller's Guide to the Elemental Plane of Fire, on Saturday, from RPGNow.com.  I am impressed with the quality of the POD hard-cover!  The internal paper has a bit of a curl to it (nit-picking).  The cover, which wraps around the cardboard forming the hard cover, is not completely sealed, on the inside of the cover (really nit-picking!) -- it does not lay perfectly flat, but I doubt it will be an issue at all, it is very minor.  Those two issues make me consider it one pip below a traditional, printed hard-cover book.  Other than that, I am very pleased with the quality of the book's binding, and printing.

Bottom line:  can't wait until WotC offers the 2e core rule book reprints as POD hard covers...  Will buy a copy of the 2e PHB in a heartbeat:  great prices, excellent quality.  Cheers!
