Second Edition AD&D / Re: Why Can't Druids Turn Undead?

Sounds reasonable to me, and IMC Druids of Meilikki are the main force against Orcus's undead.

Though a book series I've been reading recently (Dark Prophecy, Book 1: Orconomics and book 2: Son of a Liche) has me rethinking it a bit.

What clerics would be more against undead....than the clerics of a death god? Think about it, clerics of Anubis (for ex) should froth at the idea of spirits escaping the judgement of their heart weight!

When the players do something unexpcted, that's when the game really begins.

Quite true, especially when they come up with a way to resolve a monster/trap/etc. that I hadn't thought of. That's when as a DM I start having the most fun.

...I wonder what it'll do to the OSR? Gary always thought tabletop will remain (like stage theater), though never as big as it was in the 1980s. I think his comparison was:

Tabletop RPGS = Theater
Computer RPGs = Movies
MMO's = Telivision


So, will this dynamic change? Or will we see the computer OSR?

The following is from the early 1981 issue of White Dwarf (#23).

Climbing out from underastack
of rulebooks, charts, tables,
scenarios, play-aids, dice and
figures led me to ponder the role
playing games of the future. How
long before role-playing game scenarios
are fed into home computers
with a visual display capable of
holographic effects?

Imagine, each of the players with a
hand controller watching their characters
walking down a dark corridor.
Around a bend and a party of vicious
goblins in glorious 3-D colour appear
on the screen. There would be no
arguments about who is standing
where or choice of opponent as the
computer urges its goblins with axes
swinging at the heads of your characters.
Players would be screaming
at each other, with sweat dripping
off their worried foreheads as fingers
dart over the hand controllers to
save their characters' lives.

We have the games, we will soon
have the technology, let's hope we
are around to have the chance. (White Dwarf #23, Feb/Mar 1981)

...sound familiar? Ok we dont' have 3D yet, but...?

Awesome, I think Liz and I went by your Discos table while searching BadMike's mags at his booth. We should've stopped by and said "Hi"!

Black Blade apparently had the game but sold out Sat. morning. Which sucks because I only found out about it Sat morning when Steve Perrin joined Liz and I for breakfast and told us about the system. As a dyed in the wool pulp SFF fan I loved the idea....But of course, no game.

Maybe we can meet up next year, since you and your lady WILL be there right? LOL!

Yeah, I was just noting to Liz yesterday that we never got to chat with you. The con was great as usual, though I had an allergy attack Saturday afternoon at the raffle and spent most of the evening coughing up my lungs. But I got over it, and Sunday was a blast.

We played in...

Thursday:
Steve Perrin's Superhero 2044 game set in Dallas. As expected we caused the usual property damage. Liz played in Matt Finch's Swords & Wizardry game that night while I Pal'd around with my old Middle School friends the Fialkow bros.

Friday:
Today was my Victorious game "Moriarty Must Die!" and everyone seemed to have a great time. At least, we sold out of Vict rulebooks and the players were about half the purchasers so that was good.

Saturday:
Today was Chris Clark's AD&D 1E game with....let's say a lot of current political satire in it. LOL!

Sunday:
 Sunday was supposed to be a power-down day and general visiting, but I got conned into running a zombie apok game for Liz and the aforementioned Fialkows. It was in the 1980s and set in a HS. Sort of John Hughs meets George Romero. LOL!

As far as swag goes, I picked up some Different Worlds issues I was missing along with some minis from Pacesetter games. I finally have a Purple Worm!

My biggest disappointment (other than not getting to chat with more people) was that NOBODY had a print copy of Colonial Troopers by Steve Perrin for sale! Its a SciFi game based on OD&D that emulates the old Asimov-Heinlin novels. <sigh> Maybe next year.

Anyone else get some goodies?
