Save For Half episode # 12: "Boot Hill by TSR"

Saddle up y'all, and go for yer guns! The Halflings rustle up a passle of Western catch-phrases for this episode of the podcast! We're covering Boot Hill (1st and 2nd editions) and talk about weapons, maps, guns and a surprising lack of "Men with No Name"(TM)

No outlaws were harmed in the making of this podcast, except when Liz shot Mike....but she didn't shoot the deputy!

Victorious / Clockwork Mondays, Week 1
« on: September 03, 2018, 04:45:24 PM »
I've started a new series on the victoriousrpg.com site, giving backgrounds and Victorious stats for various characters that were featured in vols. 1 and 2 of the "Capes and Clockwork" anthologies. Give 'em a look and maybe use them in your home chronicles. Heck, if you like them maybe pick up a copy of Capes & Clockwork and read the stories!

I can't make it, but I'll let the guys in my Monday night Victorious group know about it...a few might be able to make it over!

General Discussion / Re: Oldhammer and OSR, is there any crossover?
« on: August 17, 2018, 11:10:22 AM »
Hello, and welcome!

I use my old figs from the late 70s-80s when minis are necessary, but I usually do the Theatre of the Mind technique. One problem I've had (and ranted about on the SFH podcast) is that minis from BITD tended to be true 25mm's while today's figs tend to be 28-32mm. Not a big deal for monsters, but character figs make the old ones look like midgets! Ok, not that bad, but still!

I got rid of my old WH40k Space Marines (pig-faced bascinets) several years ago, and kind of regret their loss. I've got WHF orks, which I use as hobgoblins due to the size but they're still useable.

Yeah, it seems like WHRPG seems to be a niche of a niche.

DM (Good at keeping it Old School, even the minis!) Mike

PS: DM Carl (Save or Die host) has used OS grenadier figs when he's run Holmes Basic...I've played in his games at NTXRPG Con!

I've heard that a lot about PF, and I guess if they're having fun with it then its all good. Personally I find pregens (except at a con) kinda dull. Expectations seem to have changed from earlier generations though, just look at some of the more railroad adventure "paths" out there; people love 'em while I'm bored to tears. <shrug>

CT is my all time fave SF game.... Even though I've played Star Frontiers and Star Trek, I always go back to my Classic Traveller!

DM (Good at his character surviving CharGen...eventually) Mike

Sorry for the delay replying, I missed these! Also I'm getting an error msg when I try to quote so I'll have to do this from memory:

Thanks for the kudos, and I didn't in fact mention the gnome lair. My mind must've shut it out...trying to protect me from my natural desire to get in there and kilkilkil! ;)

Yellow mold is always fun, I insisted on stating it up for Castles & Crusades when I worked on that game. Green slime, Bansheas, and Giant Tics as well! Morale was one of those things I rarely used, preferring to decide as DM based on the situation if the monster(s) retreated or surrendered or whatnot. For new DMs though, it isn't a bad mechanic. Even if its not used, the morale level is a handy shorthand as to how dedicated to fighting the critters are.

Flammable treasure? I suppose scrolls or wands could fit that bill. Gold has a low melting point but in my exp. PCs will happily burn it anyway and then scrape it off the cave floor. LOL!

As I've noted on the 'cast, my fave is Holmes but if I'm trying to teach someone new to play D&D IMO there's never been a clearer rules set for that sort of new person than Moldvay. As for Expert, I *think* it was on the back of the box but I can't say for sure. I'll need to get Liz to crack open our set. Or find that mini set of Expert we've got around here somewhere. :)

Glad you liked the show!

Save For Half Sideshow # 11 1/2: "Son of Blueholme!"

Once again the Save for Halflings dig through the emails in the Halfling Hideaway and answer questions from the listeners…some of them even true! After a break we travel through time and space to sit down with the Blueholme man himself, Michael “Vile Traveller” Thomas. We discuss his RPG, gaming in general, and accents. Lots of accents.

No Time Lords were harmed in the making of this podcast, not even the British ones.

Victorious / Victorious reviewed by Ol' Man Grognard
« on: July 13, 2018, 08:14:00 PM »
Greetings!

The Ol' Man Grognard himself (Glen H.) was kind enough to review the Victorious RPG hardback over at his YouTube channel. Give it a gander, along with his voluminous number of other reviews (82+!). They're relatively short (10-15 minutes each) but he gets right into the topic at hand. Which Liz and I over at Save for Half have trouble doing ourselves! ??

Check Ol' Man Grognard at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MEbkV-jWBko

Leave a review too!

Save For Half episode # 11: "No home like Blueholme”

Now that we've given our views on the Holmes Basic D&D game, your Triumphant Trio give the Blueholme Journeymanne RPG a gander. This retro-clone of the Holmes game moves beyond the Prentice rules with levels 1-3 and instead carries characters from levels 1 to 20, from beginner to the heights of power and prestige. Thrills, chills, and 3d6 in order await you in this latest show!

No Alignments were harmed in the making of this show, except by DM Mike!

Other Games / Re: Gramma World
« on: June 17, 2018, 02:47:42 PM »
OMG, this is awesome! I need to let Jim know about it... if he doesn't already.

On a similar note, in a 2E game I was playing in our characters fought a white dragon and saved this NPC grandma but my character later froze to death. He only had 1hp and the DM said he died in the night (everyone took 1hp of freezing dmg). Just to show him, I insisted on making up the granma as a character. Granny "Knives" Knickerbocker was a retired thief who returned when duty called (and her sewing business destroyed by said dragon) to stop evil in the land.

It was a blast. :D

General Discussion / Writing Adventures
« on: May 27, 2018, 06:04:04 PM »

From Venger Satanis: ‘The adventure designer inspires the GM with awesome ideas.  The GM takes those ideas, interprets them based on his own desires, adds in what seems appropriate at the time, and presents his version... his vision to the players.  The players respond as if they actually were the characters themselves.  The GM reacts to PC actions (or inaction).’

That's it.  That's what's supposed to happen.  Interrupting that sacred pattern with failed novelist backstory, tedious read-aloud text, and predetermined outcomes is ruining D&D!!!”

He's talking about D&D, but IMO it covers most FRPGs.

Discuss. ;)

Victorious / [NTXRPGCon] Victorious in Open Gaming
« on: May 17, 2018, 11:40:20 AM »

***Due to "real life" issues, I did not schedule this event in time for the NTXRPGCon Event website. However, I am still running this game on Saturday, June 9th, at the con!

VICTORIOUS RPG - "The Sky Pirates"

The year is 1889. Parliament is preparing to open for the new year. In attendance will be Queen Victoria herself to address the members of Parliament. Normally, this would be an uneventful situation, but nothing is normal since the arrival of the Super-Mankind!

With ominous threats to Her Majesty's life, the military has been called out. Even the newly created military airship division has been sighted patrolling all of London. Surely, the Super-Mankind group, The Queen's Knights, won't be needed to ensure the peace...or will they?

No. of Players: 3-6
Pre-Generated Characters
No prior experience with VICTORIOUS required to play.
Session: 4 hours max
Will start around 1pm-5pm
OPEN GAMING area.

(Time subject to change)

It's email time in the Halflings' Hideaway, and after responding to some listener feedback we have a discussion with Chris Holmes! For those not in the know, Chris is the son of J. Eric Holmes, the author of Holmes Basic Dungeons & Dragons! We talk characters, his Tales of Peril project, purple worms, and...Herculoids?
