Second Edition AD&D / Re: Stone Age Mage?
« on: March 12, 2017, 01:11:36 PM »
I believe there was an article on Ice Age D&D at one point as well.  An issue somewhere in the 60's I believe (67 or 68 maybe).  I don't believe it really covered magic, but it's been a long time since I looked at it so maybe I'm wrong.

You might want to take a look at Wolf Packs & Winter Snow.  http://www.rpgnow.com/product/189190/Wolfpacks-and-Winter-Snow-PDF

It's a pretty interesting take (especially like the Cave Paintings Magic) and may have something you can crib for your own game.

One thing that's hard to get used to in 5E for some DMs is that you can play the monsters pretty smart without totally overwhelming the players.  If a particular character is effective, you can bet their opponents will notice their competency and react accordingly.  I've been playing 5E since the playtest and, while there are some powerful combos, they tend to be one-dimensional and relatively easy to deal with once you get the hang of it.

Been playing Star Wars Battlefront II and the Mega Man X games on an SNES emulator. Im looking for some suggestions on what to grab at the Steam Sale though...

Might get some better recommendations from an actual computer/console game forum, rather than a pen & paper roleplaying game forum.  That being said, Vermintide is pretty fun and on sale for 50% off this weekend.

Lately we've been playing 5e, S&W, and The Black Hack.  They've all been quite fun, each for their own particular reasons.

A licensed tabletop roleplaying game so I could enjoy the universe in my preferred game style.

It'smedium crunch overall, though a scifi game is generally going to have a bit more complexity than it's fantasy counterparts.

There's a few freedownloads over on RPGNow/DTRPG (a starter kit, adventures, and a couple primers I think) that should give you an idea of how the game plays.

No limit for me.  I'm a firm believer in making sure that creators are rewarded for their hard work and creativity.  If someone has spent a lot of time writing, doing layout, buying/producing art, then they deserve compensation no matter if it's a physical product or a PDF.

Not going this year.  Celebrating my 20th anniversary  instead.  Actually it's our 21st, but we cancelled our trip last year because the government contract I work on got caught in a contracting issue and I was out of work for 6 weeks.  Back on track this year and ready to go.

I'll be back at GenCon next year, unless I hit NTRPG Con or GaryCon instead.

I'm with you.  I actually love both properties, but I really enjoy the way the Star Trek ships look.  They have a bit more "history" to them, as opposed to the way most of the Star Wars ships are kind of throwaway (except the Millenium Falcon of course).  Being ex-Navy I guess that's no surprise really.

1.  Cap knew that Bucky killed Stark's parents.  How?

Rewatch The Winter Soldier.  It's not directly stated, but basically spelled out in the SHIELD bunker where they encounter Arnim Zola's computer brain.  Enough evidence is given that Cap should be able to at least assume it, and I'm sure they've had time to work out  more of the Winter Soldier's history since.

Why the studio decided not to give a more positive ending.

It's more positive than the comic (where Cap is shot dead)...

On a more serious note, a couple of the actors want a slight break from the franchise to pursue some other work.  This includes Chris Evans.  I imagine this gives the studio the most flexibility moving forward.

General Discussion / Re: Baseball

You have to look back at the history of baseball to understand I guess.  Back in the day things could escalate and things would get out of hand not only on the field but in the stands and outside the park as well.  Many of the "unwritten rules" of baseball were actually developed to protect the players and the game.

Bautista didn't just flip the bat casually, he actually deliberately paused and flipped the bat in a manner calculated to rub it in the other team's collective faces.  Since it was a playoff series ending play, the Ranger's basically had to live with it all off-season, so there was no doubt he was going to get plunked when the two teams met this year.  [Note:  this is why Baseball doesn't encourage  showing up other players/teams, one you start inviting retaliation from burly major league players with bats and 100 mph fastballs, these sorts of antics can escalate pretty quickly.]

So Bautista got hit with a pitch as everyone expected, and everything should have ended there.  Instead, Bautista started jawing instead of just of taking the base.  Then on the next play he slid (very) late into 2nd base in an effort to take out the second baseman (a very dangerous play that Major League Baseball is cracking down on with new rules).  Then, to make things worse, instead of trotting home he jumped up and started advancing on Odor (2b), who promptly popped him right in the jaw.

In the end Odor was suspended for 8 games for the punch, and Bautista 1 game for his antics, with several other players and coaches getting some short suspensions as well.  You'd thing from those numbers that Odor was the villain here, but most baseball insiders will tell you that Bautista is really the catalyst for this whole thing and deserves much of the blame for the incident.

WotC D&D / Re: Laser Lore
« on: February 26, 2016, 11:22:08 AM »
I've played in a game where somebody had a similar rule for lasers, but his justification was that the laser was being fired as a beam and even when you missed you had a chance to sweep it back on target.  Of course lasers required a power source which were ridiculously hard to find so their was a balance to the guaranteed damage.
