Aside from the variable thieving abilities, what other differences, if any, are there between the 1e and 2e thief? I've always preferred the 2e thief, but I'm drawing a blank on other differences. (Curse this addled brain! At least it's slowly regaining its senses!)

The NWP's, of course.  Aside from that, and the variable distribution of percentage skill points, I don't know.  The ability to assign the percentage skill points as desired, does allow you to create a thief who specializes in a certain type of theft:  lock-picker; 2nd story man; trap-setter/remover, etc.  I really like the 2nd Ed. Thief for these reasons.  Cheers!

Checking the PHBs:

The 2e thief can use more weapons and wear more armor types.
2e puts a cap of 95% on thieving skills, including race and dex bonuses in that; 1e does not.
The threshold for whether a victim noticed a failed pickpocket attempt is figured differently.

There are other differences in the details of skill use.
