I mostly play 5e these days and use all of the methods you mentioned above but mostly minis.

When I did play the older editions we started off with TotM and then I joined a group that played with minis. So I used both at various times.

Been having trouble getting the group together over the last couple months so they are still 6th level. The last session ended in the middle of a fight with a frost giant. We were suppose to play today but two of the three friends can’t make it so the giant will have to wait.

I am thinking of starting another game with just st my sons so we can play whenever we get a chance and not have to coordinate with the others.

Btw, I did get the three friends their own 5e PHBs for Christmas. Still waiting to give it to them.

I agree that I don’t need or want detailed game worlds to play in. That material is helpful to steal ideas from but I don’t want to be beholden to someone else’s stories.

The 5e adventures would be easy enough to run with what is just in the adventure. If any of your players are Realms purist just make sure they understand that things your Realms and assume nothing is canon unless it is stated in the game.

I have been playing 5e since it came out and the only official 5e adventures I have run have been the starter set and a couple from the Yawning Portal book. I mostly run old 1e/basic adventures from the 80s with 5e.

How's the campaign going?

We are still going strong. We took a few months off during the school year when my son was not keeping with with his home work and we didn’t meet much in the summer as all the families had vacations, camps, etc.

Now they are 6th level and getting close to 7th. I have been sort of running the original DL modules but with very heavy modification. Right now they are storming an orc stronghold (an ancient Thorbardin outpost) to get a map to the gates of Thorbardin to get the refugees from Pax Tharkas to safety.

Thanks for passing this along and I am sorry to here this.

;D  LOL! ;D

Looks like we will launch near the end of May.  Working on getting a web site up prior to launching.  Dice Towers are a side product, not his main products:  Custom Gaming Tables.  His Dice Towers will out-sell his Tables by many miles, but that's OK, the Dice Towers are a wonderful item to have.  I carry mine to/from games, as I really enjoy using them, compared to rolling dice on the tabletop.

Always hated rolling d4's:  they nearly always just plopped out of my hand, onto the table, without really, "rolling".  As seen in the videos, the d4's really bounce, and spin, as they travel through the baffles.  What the videos do not show, is how fast they go through!  It is amazing to watch the slow-motion videos, then to roll dice through a Tower, yourself.  They move very fast!

I really enjoy the clatter of the dice as they bounce through the Towers.  It is fun to roll a handful of dice, at once -- they make quite the exciting noise as they blast through.  Cheers!

I hate rolling d4s and have pretty much eliminated them from my D&D games.

I have a dice tower I got a while back but never really use it. I like that these have the transparent side to see the rolling. I need to get one of those custom gaming tables some day.

Thanks.  I wish they were selling pdfs instead of trying the subscription model.  Such is life.

While they aren’t PDFs, the subscription is for accessing more than 6 characters in the character builder or for sharing your content with other players. If you just want electronic versions of the books then that is just one time purchases.  Plus the all the tools work with those products that you have purchased with no subscription fee.

The offline version of DDB through the iPhone and android apps being tested rijght now and works great. It is just Kindle like books for now.

I think you can get pdf's of 5E core books and adventures, IF you join as a paying member on Fantasy Grounds and or D&D Beyond.

You don’t need a paid subscription for D&D Beyond. You can just buy content. It isn’t pdfs but online access to the material. They are working on an offline app (for iOS and Android) that is like an ebook reader but will have additional functionality in the future.

I am quite enjoying 5e as well. As much fun as I had playing BX and 1e, 5e is the game I really wanted to be playing (I just didn't know it). :)

I do love converting old BX and 1e modules for 5e. Although I am just starting my first 5e AP (atomb of Annihilation).
