Really glad you like it, Dizzy. Honestly, I have been pleasantly surprised by the upbeat reception of the game by everyone so far. It's even got me excited again, and I wrote the thing!  :P

Has anyone seen or heard of the mighty Thorkie lately?

As for the rest of you ... are you still posting?  If so, where?
Not lately, but I did recently buy the rights to several of his adventures which I intend to publish for BLUEHOLME™ starting this year. As for me, I still post here and there on forums, as well as Facebook and Google+, but this publishing lark is really eating into my time. Not to mention the fact that my programme leader at uni has recently decided to quit, and I'm saddled with acting in his place until the school hires a real replacement (I said no to the job, I like having a life!). But, yeah, I think forums are in their death throes ... :(

Classic D&D / Re: Wrote Up Some House Rules
« on: December 27, 2017, 09:44:27 AM »
  • What! No thieves? Why, I'd sooner give up fighters. Good call getting rid of clerics, nobody likes those guys.
  • It seems you are nerfing missile weapons even more than they are already, which I guess is in keeping with your S&S vibe (not so much Tolkien, though, who had a healthy respect for bows).
  • Are your cure spells touch-ranged? Is it possible to cast touch spells in melee? If not, they will be of limited utility against the undead.
  • I personally don't like monks, bards, or druids (I don't really see them fitting into medieval fantasy well, either - bards and monks give me an iron age Celtic vibe, and while I love Bruce Lee I won't have his ilk in my pseudo-medieval fantasy. My monks tend to be bookish, spell-casting types.
  • I like the d6-d12-d20 progression (popular in some skirmish war games I have played). However, I'm not sure I like the big breaks in advancement created by the d6. Not too keen on secondary skills, really - if at all, I prefer a more general thing like background or profession.
  • I see you have an archer - but you have weakened ranged weapons. Why this class, then?
  • Amour I like - full plate is a big improvement over plate-and-mail (or whatever platemail is supposed to be).
  • Just an aside, I've never had an issue with demi-humans in an old-school game - very few players seem attracted to them on the whole.
  • Interesting take on the orc, where did that come from? I tend to see hobgoblins like that, though not too heavy on the barbaric side.
  • Why call halflings gnomes?
That's it! Bed-time for me. :)

General Discussion / Re: Problem with high-level spells
« on: December 15, 2017, 07:08:26 PM »
Well if you really want to have those spells in your normal-level campaign, there are lots of ways to do it via one-use magic items or one-off favours from patrons. I especially like those where the gift of magic isn't really a gift at all, but actually replaces a real reward! Raise dead is a classic, where it becomes a reward for carrying out a mission (which got your character killed in the first place, but hey, what's past is past). Or the grant of some great spell, but only for the purpose of carrying out a specific mission which would otherwise be too dangerous.

I can't tell whether my reply to your PM was actually sent or not (if it was, you probably have two of them!), so I thought I'd better post it here, too: my answer is "Yes!!" (two exclamation marks).

The Proof is in the Pudding! Now only a big red marker stands between backers and their hard copies of the BLUEHOLME™ Journeymanne Rules (and the updated Prentice Rules). If you want to be sure your copy has no typos, speak now or forever hold your peace!  8)

BLUEHOLME™ / Re: The BLUEHOLME™ Project

I have just uploaded a revised PDF of the Prentice Rules to OneBookShelf. This incorporates all of the errata which was uncovered during the Journeymanne process. I also tweaked the layout and moved some sections around, so it matches its "big brother" in that regard. Oh, and I put back two classic monsters missing from the previous versions: the "octocat", and the "cave creeper" (I'll leave you to guess what they really are). As there's always the chance of typos creeping in during such a process, I'll also wait until December (same as the Journeymanne Rules) before putting Prentice on Lulu.

As an aside, I was somewhat shocked to discover that there have been over 6,000 downloads of Prentice to date ...    :o

Just downloaded the updated file from drivethrurpg. Will crack it open and work through it this week.
Thanks! Let me know if you find anything. I've had a few minor tweaks already, but no biggies yet.

I'm taking a moment out to go through the Prentice Rules to make sure they are in agreement with Journeymanne. I've taken the Prentice PoD off-line for the moment, and will get it back up together with the new Journeymanne PoD in December, just to make sure that everything is ship-shape and Bristol fashion.
