I tend to base on 2nd Ed with some of it's simplification on the combat (THAC0-AC is to me quicker than looking up the matrices from 1st Ed), I add in the 1st Ed classes that's missing (mainly Monk and Assassin, not really checked the UA classes that much... the Acrobat-Thief seems rather weird, for example) and I like the Weapon Mastery things (from BECMI) better than the Weapon Proficiencies... Thief Skills from 2nd Ed feels more natural than BECMI/1st Ed...

All in all, I like to mix and match things to create my "perfect" game... If I like something from a different system/edition, I will at least see if it can implemented as a houserule in some way.... And I just like to tinker with things, see if I can come up with something weird and/or wonderful ;)

I do prefer 2e combat with the d10 and weapon speed. I use the 2e ranger with ms and hs always thought they should have it. never liked the way 2e broke the magic user down and the cleric I prefer 1e versions so I guess I just mix and match most of it

I see 2nd Ed combat with 1d10+weaponspeed as a more natural progression to 1st Eds' combat system, myself... the weaponspeed was already there (IIRC) 2nd Ed simply used the 1d10 instead of the 1d6 to get the segment of action feelng more natural.

That said, in my last game, I just rolled 1d6 to get which "side" went first.... NPCs or the players. I simplified as much as possible to cram a little bit more gameplay in to the 2 hour slot we had available

I usually like to use the ranger and customizable thief skills from 2e. I also like the 2e bard. I like the 1e illusionist, and have never really had players interested in being a specialist mage or cleric. I do d6 group initiative and drop weapon speed, weapon vs. ac, etc...
