Right... I've had the book (NeXT DMG) in me hands and skimmed through it for a couple of days now.... It's a really nice book, and does a very good job of trying to help me run a game. I'm disappointed though... it doesn't give me any imagination, I have to find that somewhere else... :P

So, you have had it for a month now.  Thoughts?
I have many thoughts, not all of them good..... or even about gaming.... :P

No for real... I like the DMG a lot, it's a good book that (tries to) explain world building, campaign  and adventure design to suit me and my players, it gives some thoughts about using pantheons, both real world mythology, existing fantasy (ala Forgotten Realms, Greyhawk, Et.al.) or creating new ones from scratch.... and tips and thoughs on running the game so that all the players (and their characters) have a chance to shine.

Overall, the NeXT DMG is one of the better ones I've seen, IMO it is far better than any previous attempts from WotC, better than 2nd Ed, and only slightly behind 1st Ed in the way it is worded. Not quite "the Gygax prose" but it doesn't read like a school txt book either (like 2nd ed does)

That seems to be the sentiment amongst many old schoolers it seems.  Thanks for sharing!

You're welcome.

I might have go at reviewing the Rules Cyclophobia next..... :P

But, yeah... NeXT seems very good, though the combat system still makes me head hurt. A LOT! BUT, then again, I've not actually tried it in a game, so i'm not gonna dizz it just yet. But reading it seems... awkward... and backwards. Nevermind the AC going the wrong way, that's workable... but it is the bonuses and level stuff (at 20th level you still have the equivalent of THACZero 12 as a Fighter?????) that seems very... weird and un-logical.

But, time will tell. I'll get a group together again at some point.

Not really, by level 20, your proficiency bonus is +6 and you ought to have a strength of 20 by then for a +5 to hit. So you should be rolling with at least +11, more if you've magically upped your stats or have magical weapons. Thats a THAC0 of 9 I believe.

There aren't nearly as many +/- in 5e as 3 or 4. Numbers are much more reasonable.

Also keep in mind that ACs are typically lower than previous editions as well.

Yeah, AC21 is a big deal most of the time. Usually we struggle to get up to 20. Magic items are generally limited.
