Save For Half episode # 34: "Advanced D&D Players Handbook by TSR"

What's this? Your Fab Four Halflings are covering that venerable book of 1st edition RPG goodness? That's right, this episode we dive into the foundational rules of that newfangled (for 1978) Advanced Dungeons & Dragons. What did we like? Hate? Actually use in our games? Tune in to find out...with maybe a controversy or two as a side-dish!

No Half-orcs were harmed in the making of this podcast, but racial class limits were!

Campaign Worlds / Re: Have You Ever NOT Rolled For A Result?
« Last post by DammitVictor on August 03, 2021, 10:01:21 AM »
Yeah, I do this all the time-- I only call for a roll when success and failure are equally plausible and equally entertaining.

But I do not fudge the dice, ever. When the dice speak, they speak with the voice of God.

Campaign Worlds / Re: What Makes Your World Yours?
« Last post by DammitVictor on August 03, 2021, 09:59:27 AM »
I mean... most of my worlds are defined by the fact that I take from a lot of radically different sources, and then combine them in ways that make people say things like  "those things don't go together" and 'that doesn't even make sense!" and "there's something wrong with you" and... worst of all, "Sir, this is a Wendy's."

But I perservere. I make the games noone else wants, so that noone else has to!

Races
  • No Tolkien: No elves, dwarves, or halflings; no gnomes; no goblinoids or orcs
  • All Humans are Planetouched: All the standard varieties. It's only partially hereditary.
  • All Nonhumans are Weird: Draconic tortles, gorilla ogres, monkey goblins, mushroom people, sexy bees, self-replicating warforged tricksters.
Technology & Culture
  • The most common melee weapon is the warhammer, because humans and tortles alike consider tortles their #2 enemy. Magic weapons are almost always hammers of some kind.
  • The most common ranged weapon is the percussion rifle, because boomshrooms are cheap and plentiful.
  • Everyone has a magic tablet device, because children are required to carve their own before they're allowed to play outside without supervision.
  • The most common and inexpensive form of transportation is dinosaurs. Fast, predatory dinosaurs are the preferred steeds of noble knights.
  • Motorized ground, sea, and air vehicles are rare and expensive because they have to be handmade by skilled artisans.
  • The Worlds are ruled by kings and queens and princesses, because they'll die if they aren't. Royalty wield godlike powers... until they're murdered and replaced by player characters.
  • Everyone speaks the same language across all the Worlds, even people who don't have even approximately human mouth-parts. (Like pretty much all non-human people.) People from different Worlds speak with funny accents.

Cosmology & Magic
  • There aren't different planes of existence, at all. There are different Worlds, and the Warp between them, and travel between Worlds can only be accomplished through the use of high-level magics... or walking through the warp zones that connect them.
  • The warp zones grow and shift like a living thing. Every couple of generations or so, either a strange World will become suddenly very close to your World, or your closest neighbor will suddenly become completely inaccessible. People are used to this.
  • There is no "arcane" or "divine" magic; psychic magic comes from within, celestial magic comes from star spirits, primal magic comes from nature spirits (including dragons), and eldritch magic comes from the warp zones. The most basic form of psychic magic is having hit dice and saving throws; everyone has some psychic ability, but spellcasters sacrifice a lot of their psychic potential for magic  powers.

My non-D&D settings are just as bizarre. I've got an "urban wuxia" setting, and an occult fantasy space opera setting.

Classic D&D / Re: Finally got a Rules Cyclopedia

Finally got my own, but in the meantime I've gone in hard for Old School Essentials so now the RC is just a source for rules OSE is "missing", like the Mystic class and more of the endgame stuff.

Save For Half episode # 32: "En Garde by GDW"

It's time to get your rapier and swing from a chandelier, because the Halflings take a look this episode at the Game Designers' Workshop edition of En Garde by Darryl Haney and Frank Chadwick (1975). There are all sort of things for PCs to do in the game, be it carouse at pubs, visit mistresses, and...join the army? All this and more await you with a clash of steel and a floppy hat. Oh, and ruffs too. Lots of ruffs!

No Bucklers were Swashed in the making of this podcast, though they were nicked!

Community Creations & Kickstarters / My new game: Old School Western Shootout
« Last post by outlander78 on July 24, 2021, 05:37:48 PM »
Hi folks.

I've written a second computer game and posted it on Wargame Vault.  My first game, Old School Computer Game, is an RPG that was inspired by classic goldbox games, and a bit by NES RPGs as well.  This second game is based on another classic, one I used to play a great deal on my old Commodore 64 far too many years ago.

If anyone is willing to exchange testing the game out and giving me criticism and feedback here, I'd be happy to send them a free copy - just email me at outlander78@hotmail.com.  I have to timebox this offer a bit, so I'll say it is open until the end of August.

Here's a link:  https://www.wargamevault.com/product/365381/Old-School-Western-Shootout?src=CommunityForum3

(I hope you don't mind me posting here ... the only tie this game has to this community is the fact I wrote Old School Computer Game a while back, and folks here had kind things to say about it.)

Thanks for reading,
Andrew

General Discussion / Re: Favorite Lines, Any Edition
« Last post by sgtslag on June 14, 2021, 02:04:49 PM »
PC Half-Orc walks into a Dwarven Armory:  husband is an Armor Smith, his wife is a Bowyer/Fletcher.  The male Dwarf Armorer asks his needs.  The Half-Orc says, "I don't want you!  I want yer' wife!"

People nearly fell out of their chairs, laughing so hard -- including the DM!  We still laugh about it, 5+ years later.

My players walked into a cave complex formerly owned by Gnomes, who were driven out by Goblins; the Gnomes hired them to eradicate the Goblin horde, so they could move back in.  The PC's went in, invisible, killed the Goblin Shaman, carried his head into the main cavern, filled with 200+ Goblins.  They used ventriloquism to sound like a demon/god, threatening the horde to leave, or else.  Then they tossed the Shaman's severed head into the midst of the horde.  I rolled a Morale Check:  19 -- the horde failed by 7+, resulting in complete panic!  Every single Goblin ran for the nearest exit, trampling anyone who got in their way.

Now, when the PC's get into a tight spot, they say, "We need a severed head!"  Cheers!
